PTSD

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) can develop as a result of experiencing a life-threatening traumatic event. It is normal to have stress reactions after experiencing a traumatic event, such as troubles sleeping or feeling on edge. If the distress, reactions, thoughts, or feelings from the trauma last longer than a month and are interfering with a person's ability to function, it is possible that PTSD has developed. It is important to consult a doctor or mental health provider if your symptoms are impacting your daily living.

There are several effective, evidence-based treatments for PTSD. At Therapy Collective, we have therapists trained in three treatments for PTSD: Prolonged Exposure (PE) Therapy, Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), and Cognitive Hypnotherapy (CHT). You can find further information about EMDR here and CHT here

Prolonged Exposure Therapy works to help clients by gradually approaching memories, feelings, and situations related to the trauma. PTSD symptoms are often maintained through avoidance of anything that reminds the person of their trauma. In the short-term, this helps the person feel better in the moment, but in the long-term often prevents from living their life. Prolonged exposure works by helps the person navigate their trauma by safely confronting feared situations, thoughts, and feelings.

Prolonged Exposure Therapy is typically provided over 8-15 weekly sessions or around 3 months. Sessions are usually 90 minutes in length to allow for sufficient processing of the experience.
