Family Therapy

Family therapy involves meeting as a group to speak and be heard by one another. Each family system is unique and does not always entail a nuclear makeup of two parents with their children. Families can be complex in their origin and can include single parent families, extended families, families without children, chosen families, and blended families.

Emotional bonds are a source of resilience, they make us strong. However, just as individuals experience difficulties, so too do families. This can look like challenges in communication, direct or vicarious traumas, transitions, relationship difficulties, and more.

Sometimes individual issues can impact the family system, therefore individual therapy may be suggested alongside family work to improve the overall dynamics. Individual work would be completed with an individual therapist and the individual would then return to family therapy to work on the shared concerns.

In a family system is helpful to understand others’ experiences of the same challenges in order to move forward and heal. Therapy can help families to improve communication and resolve conflicts, develop healthy boundaries, improve dynamics and relationships, and provide strength and tools for coping.
